Wednesday, August 20 2008 -- BEIJING - The Williams sisters, Venus and Serena claimed their second Olympic gold in the doubles division last Sunday, August 17, 2008. They repeated their phenomenal performance from 2000’s Sydney Olympics to score another gold for the United States team. Venus and Serena Williams beat Ana Isabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain, 6-2, 6-0 in the finals round of the competition.
The sisters’ happiness where infectious with jumps for joy and shrieks when Ruano Pascual’s shot went long giving the Williamses the winning point.
Venus said that the moment was even more special considering she was playing alongside her sister. “…This kind of moment… it never grows old”, she said.
The pair was unable to team up for the 2004 Athens Olympics due to an injury sustained by Serena Williams.
Serena Williams was also bidding for a gold medal in the singles tennis event but was unable to reach the finals, stopped short at the quarterfinals.
She said that they “really wanted to win” and have “contributed to our country in a huge way”. And they did just that. Both sisters have suffered knee injuries the month following the Olympics pulling out of tournaments. But their performance did not show any sign of the injuries affecting their resolve to win.
