Going for Gold – Del Potro on a Winning Streak

Monday, August 18 2008 -- It might not be a gold medal that Juan Martin Del Potro is after but after his superb and undeterred performance, he may as well be awarded one. His most recent claim to victory was on Sunday, the finals of the Legg Mason Classic when Del Potro was pitted against Viktor Troicki.

Viktor Troicki is only some several years older than Del Potro. Though both players are still young, Del Potro had an advantage over Troicki because it was Troicki’s first time to play in an ATP final and he had to play with a sore back.

Though Del Potro had skill, he confessed to being very much nervous during the match. Practically every spectator in the match was betting on Del Potro to win. However, Del Potro remained focus and just played the best that he could and that garnered him another ATP title. Del Potro now has another achievement to add to his growing resume. Before winning this recent ATP final Del Potro also had another career highlight by defeating one of America’s best players, Andy Roddick in a Los Angeles match. From his performance and achievements alone, it’s easy to understand why this young tennis protégé skyrocketed in the ATP rankings, leaping over 900 other players and landing in the top 10. With 38 wins out of his 40 sets, Del Potro is definitely on a winning streak which might continue for a very long time.
