Williams tried to reduce the gap on the final set with a five-point deficiency but Dementieva refused to back down securing the win with a wide volley from the American.

Her journey to the quarterfinals had the No. 4 seeded Williams winning ten games, defeating Samantha Stosur of Australia prior to the quarterfinals. She had a relatively smooth flow in this year’s Olympics firing powerful shots until she meet Dementieva in the third round.

Williams opened 2008 with the US Team winning the Hopman Cup in Australia, the fifth time that the United States has won the tournament.

She defeated sister, Venus Williams twice this year, first at the Bangalore Open and the 2008 French Open singles title. Both times they were face-to-face in the final round.

Now, her bid at the gold rests on a doubles win with Venus. The tandem has previously won the Olympic doubles gold medal in Sydney.

The American has yet to win a gold medal in the single division of the Olympics and says she hopes she will still be on top of her game for the next Olympic Games.
