2008 Washington Redskins Preview

Saturday, August 16 2008 -- Last season, the Washington Redskins, who finished 9-7, made their second playoff appearance in three seasons. This season first-time head coach Jim Zorn, who takes over for Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs, coaches an improved team.

Zorn's philosophy is pass, pass, pass and pass again. Can he do that with this team?

Offense

Quarterback Jason Campbell, who threw 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2007, has to be more accurate for this offense to succeed. This is his fourth season, a time when NFL quarterbacks are expected to mature. RBs Clinton Portis, who ran for 1,262 yards and 11 scores, and Ladell Betts make a fine one-two punch. The versatile Portis also had 47 catches. If Santana Moss, who's a true game breaker, can stay healthy the receiving unit will be deadly. Pro Bowler Chris Cooley at tight end had 66 catches for 786 yards and eight scores. The O-line could be weak on the right.

Defense

Washington's defense was ranked fourth against the rush. And although they stopped the run, they were not effective with their pass rush. The sack leader was D-end Andre Carter with 10.5. Veteran middle linebacker, London Fletcher, who joined the team last season and became a leader, had a club-high 128 tackles. The addition of Pro Bowl LB Jason Taylor, formerly of Miami, is massive. Safety LaRon Landry is set to breakout.

Special Teams

On returns, Rock Cartwright was solid. Jerome Mathias is also a threat. Punter Derrick Frost and placekicker Shaun Suisham were inconsistent—fading down the stretch.

Overview

If the Redskins are going to be a true force this season, Campbell has to find his stride. Additionally, coach Zorn must create his own identity and not get lost in the shadow of Gibbs. There are some question marks on both offense and defense. They'll be answered if some young guys step up.
