Saturday, August 9 2008 -- On the August 18 publication of the Top 100 for tennis, Rafael Nadal’s name will appear as No.1 breaking the Swiss Roger Federer’s record 235 consecutive weeks dominating the list.
Rafael Nadal joins the ranks of Bjorn Borg, Rod Laver and Andre Agassi to be the only players in men’s tennis to win both the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year.
He will aim for another first with a shiny Olympic gold medal in his trophy room. Rafael Nadal will represent Spain in this year’s Olympics and has caught the 13-hour trip to Beijing for the Games.
In an interview prior to his departure, the 22-year old remarks that he will “really enjoy the Olympic atmosphere” and says that “It’s an honor to represent your country and I look forward to taking part (in the Olympics).”
With an aggressive and athletic playing style, Nadal’s game has been described as a great potential for injury. But Nadal has defended his game being confident with his playing form and ability to cover the whole court.
Aside from the two Grand Slam titles this year, he has also won the Conde de Godo, Toronto, Hamburg, Monte Carlo and Queen’s tournaments.
